# SHA3

The SHA-3 (Secure Hash Algorithm 3) hash functions were released by NIST on August 5, 2015. Although part of the same series of standards, SHA-3 is internally quite different from the MD5-like structure of SHA-1 and SHA-2. SHA-3 is a subset of the broader cryptographic primitive family Keccak designed by Guido Bertoni, Joan Daemen, Michaël Peeters, and Gilles Van Assche, building upon RadioGatún. SHA3 lives in the **Hashing** category of the `fx` menu. See [SHA-3](https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/FIPS/NIST.FIPS.202.pdf) for format details.

## Parameters

| Parameter | Type | Required | Default | Description |
| --------- | ------ | -------- | ------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| Input | string | yes | — | Value to transform. Previous step output or a literal. |
| Size | string | no | `512` | Choose one of: `512`, `384`, `256`, `224`. |

`Input` is the primary value (previous step output or a literal).

## Returned value

| Type | Description |
| -------- | ---------------------------------- |
| `string` | Result of the SHA3 transformation. |

## Limitations

- This operation treats Input as raw bytes (binary-capable). Non-text payloads may display differently after decoding.
- Wrong key, algorithm options, or malformed input typically raises an evaluation error — fix Input or options before re-running.

## Example

<details>
<summary>Run SHA3</summary>

The SHA-3 (Secure Hash Algorithm 3) hash functions were released by NIST on August 5, 2015. Adjust optional parameters when the defaults do not match your payload.

1. Set **Input** to the value to transform (previous step output or a literal).

2. Review **Size** and keep defaults unless your format requires otherwise.

3. Confirm **Output value** shows the transformed result.
