# MD5

MD5 (Message-Digest 5) is a widely used hash function. It has been used in a variety of security applications and is also commonly used to check the integrity of files. However, MD5 is not collision resistant and it isn't suitable for applications like SSL/TLS certificates or digital signatures that rely on this property. MD5 lives in the **Hashing** category of the `fx` menu. See [MD5](https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc1321) for format details.

## Parameter

| Parameter | Type   | Required | Default | Description                                            |
| --------- | ------ | -------- | ------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| Input     | string | yes      | —       | Value to transform. Previous step output or a literal. |

`Input` is the primary value (previous step output or a literal).

## Returned value

| Type     | Description                       |
| -------- | --------------------------------- |
| `string` | Result of the MD5 transformation. |

## Limitations

- This operation treats Input as raw bytes (binary-capable). Non-text payloads may display differently after decoding.
- Wrong key, algorithm options, or malformed input typically raises an evaluation error — fix Input or options before re-running.

## Example

<details>
<summary>Hash a string with MD5</summary>

Produce an MD5 digest of the input.

1. Set **Input** to the text to hash. Paste:

   ```text title="Input"
   hello
   ```

2. Confirm **Output value** is the MD5 hex digest.
